If you have a child or frequently let one into your home, you need to know how important childproofing is. The truth is that there are a lot of things that can be dangerous, but you don’t have to navigate this alone! To help you understand childproofing, I met with David Sarner of Childproofing Experts.
He has been in this field for over 20 years now, so he knows what he is doing. When he helps a client with childproofing, he comes to their home and does an evaluation. He’ll point out any potential hazards and recommend solutions for them. He says that a lot of it has to do with putting gates on stairs, securing furniture, putting latches on cabinets, and overall just educating parents.
David recommends getting down on the floor and seeing the space from the eyes of a child. One of his biggest pieces of advice is anchoring furniture. When the drawers of a dresser are open, for example, gravity will do its thing. He says that most people are astonished by how easy it is for furniture to fall. Still, know that anchoring furniture needs to be done correctly.
